Members of the Authority

Durham Police Authority consists of 17 Members as prescribed under Section 3 of the Police Act 1996.

  • There are 9 Councillor Members appointed by Durham County Council and Darlington Borough Council.
  • Our 8 Independent Members are local people appointed following a recruitment process. One of these Independent Members is also a serving magistrate.

Members can be re-elected or re-appointed, unless disqualified from previous membership. This mix of people provides a wide range of backgrounds and skills that contributes to the work we do.

All Members of the Police Authority must live or work within the Police Authority area of County Durham or Darlington. Of the 17 members who serve the Police Authority, 12 are male and 5 are female.

Members' Allowances

The Police Act 1996 (as amended by the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001) allows each Police Authority to decide its own allowances scheme including the payments which it makes to its Chair, Deputy Chair (if applicable) and other Members.

Code of Conduct

The Local Government Act 2000 introduced a new ethical framework and the Police Authority was required to adopt a Code of Conduct to apply to all members of the Authority. The Authority agreed to adopt the Model Code of Conduct recommended by the Standards Board.

The Code not only covers the conduct of Members when carrying out their duties but also requires them to register personal and financial interests. The Authority's Standards Committee monitors the operation of the Code of Conduct and all ethical matters are dealt with by the Authority's Monitoring Officer:
