Profile
Peter Thompson was born in 1944 and educated locally in Durham. He has been a Magistrate since 1988. Upon retirement from public service in 1996, as Deputy Chief Officer of a major North East local government department, Peter embarked upon the pursuit of political and Criminal Justice System interests.
Peter has been member of Durham Police Authority since 1998 and it’s Chair for the last 5 years. He is a member of the Independent Custody Visitors Association.
He was a member of Durham County Council from 2001-2005 and the City of Durham Council in 2007/2008 and a member of the National Probation Service, Durham County between 2003/2008.
Peter is also a former member of the Unified Courts Board for Cleveland, Durham and Northumbria, and a Member of the Board of Visitors/Independent Monitoring Board for H.M.P. Frankland from 1999-2005. He also sat on the National Criminal Justice Board.
He is a member of the Boards of various charitable and voluntary organisations, is a school governor, and a Member of the Association of Police Authorities Board where his portfolio responsibilities include Specials, Volunteering and Learning and Development.

Expenses and Allowances
Expenses and allowances, which are recoverable, are incurred as part of Mr Thompson's role as Board Member of the APA and representative at meetings which he attends for the Board.
This includes the National Criminal Justice Board, the Independant Custody Visitors Association (National Vice Chair) and in Mr Thompson's capacity as the APA representative on various national bodies related to Mr Thompson's portfolio for Learning and Development in the Police Service.

The figures in the above Expenses and Allowances document excludes the allowance of £587.43 per month, which Mr Thompson also receives as a Board Member representing the North East Region for the Association of Police Authorities (APA).
Mr Thompson has insisted for some time in travelling standard class and, wherever possible, uses his free bus pass for local travel.
