Keys to the Past

Moat Hill (Wark)

Moat Hill is all that remains of what may have been a motte and bailey castle of early 12th century date. It was built on a flat-topped, natural hill. The motte stood in the north-west corner. Modern farm buildings now occupy the site. Although one building has a date stone of ‘1676’ over the door, most were built after 1800.
