Who We Are

Durham Police Authority consists of 17 members as prescribed under Section 3 of the Police Act 1996. We have 9 councillor members, 3 magistrate members and 5 independent members. The independent members generally hold office for 4 years.

Members can be re-elected or re-appointed, if not disqualified from previous membership. This mix of people provides a wide range of backgrounds and skills that contributes to the work we do.

All 17 members of the Police Authority must live or work within the Police Authority area (ie County Durham or Darlington). Of our current members, 12 are male (71%) and 5 are female (29%).
